Arsenal Hopeful Of Beating Liverpool To €64m-Rated Hitman
Arsenal are hopeful of signing €64m-rated Liverpool target Edinson Cavani this summer despite the striker suggesting he’ll be staying at Paris Saint-Germain.
The summer transfer window is now well under way and managers are working hard to strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal remain hopeful of signing Liverpool target Edinson Cavani.
Arsenal are hopeful of signing €64m-rated Liverpool target Edinson Cavani this summer despite the striker suggesting he’ll be staying at Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports.
Cavani’s future has been cast in doubt in recent months after the Uruguayan international admitted back in April that he’s not happy at having to play out wide to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic through the middle, and the former Napoli hitman confirmed that he planned to hold talks with PSG chiefs this summer to discuss his concerns.
The uncertainty over his future led to speculation he could be on the move this summer and the players agent, Claudio Anellucci, claimed last week that Arsenal and Liverpool were among the clubs who have put forward proposals to the 27-year-old in recent months.
The duo’s hopes of being able to land Cavani appeared over after the striker revealed that he is content to remain at the Parc des Princes after holding talks with boss Laurent Blanc, and hinted that he’d be playing a more central role this coming season.
“I’m certain that I’ll stay – why wouldn’t I?
“I feel very good in Paris, I have a contract to respect at PSG. I’d prefer to be here. I feel good here.”
“We had some small problems with respect to the position I wanted but I feel very good about that,”
“I waited for the right moment to speak. It’s important for a striker to play in a position which is natural for him. Now everyone knows my position and it’s not worth talking about.” source: Goal
However, despite these comments, the Metro claim that Arsene Wenger is still hopeful of being able to lure Cavani to the Emirates this summer as he looks to bring in another world class forward before the window shuts at the end of the month.
The newspaper suggests that Cavani would cost around €64m (£51m) – which is a similar fee to what PSG paid Napoli last summer – but any potential deal will hinge on whether the Ligue 1 champions are able to wrap up a deal for Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria.
The Gunners still have plenty of money to spend this summer and no doubt a player like Cavani would be well received by the Arsenal faithful, and he’d give them another option to Olivier Giroud up front this season if the north Londoners were able to bring him to England.

But despite what the Metro are reporting, I’d still be surprised to see Wenger spend around £50m on a striker when a centre-back and a defensive midfielder should be far more pressing concerns for the French boss.
