Manchester United have broken the British transfer record after officially announcing the signing of winger Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7 million.
The summer transfer window is now reaching its climax and managers are working hard to make some last minute additions to their squad, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Angel Di Maria has completed his move to Man Utd.
Manchester United have broken the British transfer record after announcing the signing of winger Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid for £59.7m.
The Argentinean international has been widely tipped to leave Madrid this summer and manager Carlo Ancleotti confirmed last week that the player had asked to leave the club after turning down a contract extension.
Manchester United soon emerged as the front-runners for his signature and news broke on Monday that the former champions had agreed a record €75m (£59.7m) deal that would also include various additional add ons.
Di Maria was then spotted heading to United’s Carrington training base where he’s understood to have agreed terms over a five-year deal and completed his medical, and now the club have confirmed on their official website that the Argentinean has finalised his move to Old Trafford.
After completing the switch, Di Maria told ManUtd.com:
“I am absolutely delighted to be joining Manchester United. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for.
“Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started.”
Di Maria becomes United’s fourth major summer signing following the arrivals of Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo and although he wont feature against MK Dons tonight in the Capital One Cup, he is expected to be registered in time with the FA to make his debut away at Burnley this weekend.
This is certainly a hugely exciting signing for United as Di Maria is one of the best attacker in the world and he’ll add a whole new dimension to their play in the final third, but it’s going to be interesting to see how Louis van Gaal fits him in to his team. Juan Mata’s place behind Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie must surely now be under threat as Di Maria isn’t really suited to playing the wing-back role in van Gaal’s new 3-5-2 formation, but we’ll have to see how he lines-up this weekend.
