10-man Newcastle ended Chelsea’s unbeaten record with Papiss Cisse coming off the bench to score twice during a 2-1 win at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless first half, Newcastle opened the scoring shortly after the break when substitute Papiss Cisse was on hand to poke home from close range in the 57th minute.
The Senegalese international then made it 2-0 with 12 minutes left when he was on hand to slot home after Thibaut Courtois had saved Moussa Sissoko’s initial shot.
The game then turned when Steven Taylor was sent off in the 81st minute for a second bookable offence and Chelsea pulled one back from the resulting free-kick, with Didier Droba heading home from Cesc Fabregas’s superb delivery.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser but the home side held on to inflict a first defeat of the season on Jose Mourinho’s men and move the Geordies up to seventh in the table.
