With the January transfer in full swing, managers are strengthening their squads ahead of the second half of the season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd hold talks with the agent of Nicolas Otamendi…..
Manchester United officials have held talks with the agent of Nicolas Otamendi but it looks like they may have to wait until the summer to land the €50m-rated Valencia defender, according to reports.
United boss Louis van Gaal is believed to be in the market for another central defender this month after seeing his options at the back decimated by injury during the first half of the season with Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans all spending time on the sidelines.
Several names have been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks but the latest is Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi with speculation earlier this week suggesting that United have had a €35m (£27m) offer rejected for the Argentinean international.
Those reports were strongly denied by United but it seems the rumours refuse to go away as Goal are now reporting today that the Red Devils have made contact with Otamendi’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to discuss a potential move.
However, it looks like United will be frustrated in their attempts as the outlet claims that Mendes made it clear Valencia have no intention of selling this month and they are under no pressure to sell their best players anymore after being taken over by billionaire Peter Lim.
Otamendi does have a release clause set at €50m (£37.5m) so there would be little the Spanish outfit could do if United met that figure, but van Gaal is highly unlikely to go that high.

United were linked with Otamendi when he left Porto for Valencia a year ago and although it appears their interest has remained, it looks like they’ll either have to wait until the summer to stand a chance of signing him for a reasonable fee, or move on to another target if van Gaal wants to sign a centre-back this month.
