Klopp Confirms Quadruple Injury Boost Including Sturridge & Coutinho Updates
Jurgen Klopp has offered a team news update ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Leicester including positive news on Sturridge, Coutinho, Skrtel and Origi.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed a quadruple injury boost with Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Martin Skrtel and Divock Origi all set to resume training this week.
Sturridge has once again seen his season hampered by a series of injury problems with the striker managing just six appearances in all competitions so far this campaign.
The 26-year-old has been slowly working his way back to full fitness but Klopp confirmed last week that Sturridge was still struggling to train freely for any length of time without feeling discomfort.
However, after another period of rest, Klopp has revealed that the England international is now set to return to full training on Wednesday as he looks to make another comeback attempt.
Skrtel has been out since suffering a hamstring injury just before Christmas but the Slovakian centre-back is closing in on making his comeback as he’s due to return to training later this week.
In a further boost, Klopp also revealed that Coutinho is set to return to the Melwood training pitch on Thursday after overcoming a hamstring injury that’s kept him on the sidelines since the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Stoke on January 5th.
The final update from Klopp concerned Origi and the Belgian international will also return to training on Thursday after recovering from a knee injury which he sustained on Boxing Day.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow night’s clash at Leicester City, the Reds boss told Liverpoolfc.com:
“[They are] closer, close to returning to training.
“Martin needs two or three days’ more time. Divock and Phil and Daniel should return to training – Daniel on Wednesday and the other two on Thursday. That’s the plan.
“And Martin, I think, at the weekend. These are our transfers… four new players for LFC! That is good for us, of course.
“With the really long-term injuries [Joe Gomez and Danny Ings], nothing has changed.”
The Liverpool coaches will now continue to try and get Sturridge in a condition where he’s ready to play for the first team again, although Klopp has previously suggested he want’s the striker to get 10 consecutive days training under his belt before he’ll be considered for a first team return, so we’ll have to see how he copes when he resumes training on Wednesday.
It will also be a major boost for Klopp to be able to call upon Skrtel and Coutinho again as the duo have been sorely missed in recent weeks, while Origi will give the German coach another option up front with Christian Benteke continuing to struggle with the Liverpool bosses style of play.
