Arsenal Loan Watch: Aneke Scores | Campbell’s Maradona Impression | Watt Wins
Arsenal have several players out on loan right now, here we look at how they got on during the last week of fixtures.
Few loan players played this week; Lansbury remains injured for West Ham and Nicklas Bendtner was not involved for Sunderland after not training during the week due to a groin injury. Samuel Galindo was an unused substitute for Gimnastic de Tarragona and out-of-favour Wellington Silva was again left out, as was Pedro Botelho. The Brazilian season has now finished, meaning Denilson will not be playing for a number of weeks.
Carlos Vela: The Mexican played eighty-two minutes as his side drew 1-1 away to Villarreal. After a goalless first half Sociedad took the lead when Aranburu, who was unchallenged as he cut in from the left, fired past Diego Lopez. Vela had looked promising on the counter attack but the game turned in the sixty-second minute when Elustondo picked up a silly second yellow card, leaving Vela’s side with only ten men. Villarreal took soon advantage, equalising through Ruben just ten minutes later. Vela was then sacrificed for a midfielder as Sociedad successfully held out for a draw.
Kyle Bartley: The young centre back was picked up a yellow card before being substituted after just fifty-six minutes of Ranger’s 2-0 victory at home to Hibs. Bartley was once again utilised as a defensive midfielder rather than a defender and picked up his booking for fouling O’Connor in the first half. He was replaced by the Norwegian Bendiksen who had impressed the previous week. Jelavic scored both goals for The Gers, keeping them four points clear at the top of the SPL.
Chuks Aneke and Luke Freeman: Aneke scored his first goal for Stevenage in just his second start as they beat Hitchin 2-0 in the Hertfordshire Senior Cup. They eighteen year old played a one-two with May before firing well past Bennet. Freeman then started for The Boro in their 0-0 draw away at Preston North End. The home side dominated the game but wasted numerous chances to score. Freeman struggled to get a foothold in the game and was replaced on the hour by Aneke.
Sanchez Watt: The winger played most of the game as his side Sheffield Wednesday won 2-0 at Oldham. Prutton opened the scoring just after the hour, turning well before finishing past Cisak. Sanchez Watt then went down in the penalty area and the referee, to the surprise of both sides, pointed to the spot and Lowe converted securing Wednesday’s third win in a row. Watt was replaced by defender Bennett with just two minutes left as Sheffield sat back and protected their lead.
Joel Campbell: The Costa Rican replaced former Gunner Giles Sunu at half time as his Lorient side lost 1-0 at home to Lyon . Immediately after Campbell had a shot saved, Lacazette gave Lyon the lead, slotting the ball nicely past Audard in the Lorient goal. Campbell was then booked for an amusingly blatant handball (think Maradona but double-handed and outside the area), likely due to his frustration that the one time he was not offside he couldn’t (legally) reach the ball. Campbell was quiet as Lorient pushed for a win, but good saves from Lloris kept Les Merlus at bay.
