Chelsea Table £10.6m Defender Bid, But Arsenal Also Register Their Interest
Chelsea have tabled a £10.6m bid for Baba Rahman but will now face stiff competition from Arsenal for the Augsburg defender’s signature, according to reports
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea face competition from Arsenal for Baba Rahman….
Chelsea have tabled a £10.6m bid for Baba Rahman but will now face stiff competition from Arsenal for the Augsburg defender’s signature, according to the Express.
The Premier League champions have been fairly quiet in the transfer market so far but it appears that could be about to change as doubts over the future of Filipe Luis continue to grow.
The Brazilian international only moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid last summer but things haven’t gone according to plan as he’s failed to establish himself as a regular in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven.
The lack of playing time has led to speculation Luis could be heading back to Spain with the Express suggesting that a return to Atletico could be on the cards while Inter Milan are also believed to be keeping an eye on the 29-year-old.
If Luis does end up leaving West London this summer then Mourinho will need to find a replacement and the Express claim that Chelsea have tabled an opening £10.6m bid for Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman.
However, it looks like the Blues still have some work to do before a deal is complete as the newspaper suggests that not only are the German outfit holding out for closer to £15m for their prize asset, but Arsenal have also supposedly registered their interest in signing the 20-year-old.
Rahman has just come off the back of an excellent campaign in Germany where his impressive displays helped Augsburg finish fifth in the Bundesliga table to qualify for the Europa League next year.
The Ghana international is currently back in his homeland on holiday but with two of England’s biggest clubs seemingly keen on acquiring his services, he may be tempted by a move to the Premier League this summer.
Rahman would be an exciting replacement for Luis if Chelsea could win the race for his signature but I fear the youngster will suffer the same fate as his predecessor as he’s unlikely to displace Cesar Azpilicueta any time soon, with the Spaniard making the left-back spot his own over the past 18 months.

The Ghanaian star may also struggle for regular game-time if he opts for a move to Arsenal as Arsene Wenger already has Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs to choose from at left-back – although you’d expect one of those two to leave should the club bring in Rahman.
So while I think the youngster would be a good addition for either club, if Rahman wants to be playing regularly every week, perhaps he’s best to snub the interest from Chelsea and Arsenal and set his sights a little lower this summer.
