With the summer transfer window finally open for business, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, the latest on Man Utd’s pursuit of Sergio Ramos….
Manchester United’s pursuit of Sergio Ramos has been one of the saga’s of the summer so far and the speculation is reaching fever-pitch, so here we’ll bring you the latest updates from the world’s media.
Contract offer
Let’s start with Spanish outlet Cadena SER and it looks like bad news for United and they claim that Real Madrid are determined to keep hold of Ramos and have responded to United’s interest by offering the centre-back a new bumper contract worth €7.5m (£5.3m) per season.
However, the good news for United is that the report suggests Ramos will reject the offer and hold out for a deal worth closer to €10m (£7.1m) per season, with the 29-year-old understood to be feeling aggrieved by the behavior of the clubs hierarchy.
With Madrid believed to be only willing to go to €8m (£5.7m), it looks like the contract stand-off will continue and that can only enhance the chances of United being able to lure Ramos away from the Bernabeu this summer.
Ramos determined to leave
Over at Marca, they maintain the stance that Ramos is determined to leave Madrid this summer because he is furious with the club for questioning his professionalism and believes the breakdown in his relationship with president Florentino Perez is beyond repair.
The Spanish daily claim that Ramos’s decision is not about money and he is no longer interested in negotiating a new deal with Madrid, as he has his heart set on a new challenge.
So this all suggests a move to United is on the cards, right?
Well, maybe not, as Marca go on to say that Madrid are willing to wait it out as they believe that Ramos will eventually have a change of heart and once the dust has settled, they will be able to sit down and thrash out a new deal.
The paper suggests that Madrid are confident the defender won’t force a move as it will damage his image with the fans as a club legend, and with Ramos still having two years remaining on his contract, the club are ready to bide their time and hope an agreement can eventually be found.
So that’s the latest news from the Spanish papers and it seems Ramos’s future is a delicate situation and I don’t see a resolution any time soon. Madrid are going to do all they can to keep hold of the player and they are in no rush to cash-in as he two years left on his deal.

If United want to sign him, I have a feeling they are going to have to pay a ridiculous fee that is too good for Madrid to turn down, but with Ramos now 29 would it be wise to pay over the odds for a player who’ll have little sell-on value?
The future of David De Gea also complicates matters even further, so it’s certainly going to be interesting to see how this all turns out. I’m sure there will be more updates over the coming days but I don’t see an end to this saga any time soon….
