Man Utd Close-In On Deal For Argentinean Attacker
Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Benfica attacker Nicolas Gaitan with an agreement between the two clubs understood to be just hours away
With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of next season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd close in on Nicolas Gaitan….
Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Benfica attacker Nicolas Gaitan with an agreement between the two clubs understood to be just hours away, according to the Express.
United have been linked with a move for Gaitan throughout recent transfer windows and this summer has once again seen the Red Devils credited with an interest in the attacker.
The speculation started early this time around with the Metro reporting back in May that Benfica president Luis Filipe Viera had flown over to the UK to hold talks with United officials before Rafael da Silva’s agent was quoted in the Express last month as confirming that the two clubs were in talks over a potential swap deal.
Cassiano Pereira is quoted as saying in the newspaper:
“Benfica and Man United are in negotiations over Gaitán and one offer includes Rafael to join Benfica,”
“Rafael wants to join Benfica. It’s a big European club. If the talks proceed, it won’t be difficult to reach an agreement.”
The rumours have quietened down in recent weeks but that’s now changed today as the Express are citing reports coming out of Spain that claim United are closing-in on a deal to sign Gaitan with an agreement understood to be just hours away.
Obviously any transfer speculation should be taken with a pinch of salt, particularly any involving Gaitan to United as this story has been on-going for what feels like years, but it would be interesting if van Gaal was trying to sign the Argentinean international.
With Angel Di Maria looking increasingly likely to leave Old Trafford, van Gaal needs to sign a replacement and many newspapers believe that man will be Barcelona’s Pedro [via the Daily Mail], so why the interest in Gaitan?
Perhaps van Gaal is lining-up a move for the 27-year-old in-case the proposed deal for Pedro falls through, or maybe he’s planning to bring in two new attackers to give him even more options in the final third next season.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but I personally think this latest reported interest in Gaitan is just idle speculation and fully expect Pedro to come in as Di Maria’s replacement once he completes his move to PSG.
