Man Utd Table Bid For £35m-Rated Star But Face Competition From Man City
Manchester United have made a bid for £35m Nicolas Otamendi but they face competition from Manchester City for the Valencia centre-backs signature.
With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads for the new season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Man Utd and Man City are linked with Nicolas Otamendi….
Manchester United have made a bid for £35m-rated Nicolas Otamendi but they face competition from Manchester City for the Valencia centre-backs signature, according to the Express.
Louis van Gaal has been hotly tipped to sign another defender this summer and Otamendi has been one of the big names who’ve been linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks.
United have always denied any interest in the Argentinean international but the Express are carrying a quote from Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague who claims that the Red Devils have now made a formal bid for Otamendi’s services.
However, it appears United still have a lot of work to do before they wrap-up their latest signing as Balague says that Manchester City have also put forward an offer but they are believed to be well below the defender’s £35m (€50m) buy-out clause.
“Valencia considering offers from City and United. None reaches €50m of buy out clause. Spanish club resigned he will go to the PL.” Balague is quoted as saying by the Express
The news comes shortly after the Metro cited reports coming out of Spain which claimed that Otamendi was set for a move to the Premier League with United named as the player’s most likely destination.
It remains to be seen whether that turns out to be the case but it looks like both United and City are working hard behind the scenes to try and lure the South American to England this summer.
van Gaal’s side have kept two clean sheets in their opening two games this season but I’d still expect the Dutchman to push hard to bring in another centre-back during the closing stages of the summer and it appears Otamendi is firmly on his radar.
However, City will provide stiff competition as they have the financial muscle to match their rivals so it will be interesting to see where the player ends up if both clubs can agree a deal with Valencia.
Otamendi has developed into one of the best centre-backs in Spain following his move from Porto in January 2014 and I think he’d be an excellent signing for either club.

The 27-year-old is a strong and powerful defender so he should have no problem adjusting to life in the Premier League, but we should wait and see how things develop as Valencia are unlikely to let him go without a fight.
