Manchester United will look to give their top four hopes a boost when they take on West Brom at the Hawthorns on Sunday afternoon. Here is the side I think van Gaal will pick:
Goalkeeper: David de Gea is certain keep his place in goal this weekend with Sergio Romero among the subs.
Defence: van Gaal’s problems in defence have eased as Chris Smalling is expected to make his return after missing the last three games with a shoulder injury while Matteo Darmian could also come back in to the starting eleven after making a successful substitute appearance in midweek.
Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia have been declared fit by van Gaal but the Dutchman has hinted he won’t rush them and would prefer to play the duo in the under-21 team first, so Marcos Rojo should continue at left-back while Daley Blind will also keep his place in defence.
Midfield: Michael Carrick is set for a recall after being rested for the 1-0 win over Watford on Wednesday night and he should line-up alongside Morgan Schneiderlin in midfield. Bastian Schweinsteiger is expected back in training next week but this game comes too soon while Marouane Fellaini could be back on the bench after recovering from injury.
Attack: Marcus Rashford could be set for a breather as it’s been a hectic couple of weeks of the youngster. Anthony Martial could therefore start up front with Jesse Lingard returning to the attack along with Juan Mata and Memphis Depay.
Wayne Rooney remains out with a knee injury and isn’t expected back until April.
Here is how we think United will line-up:
