Man Utd Star Set To Miss Rest Of Season After Suffering Major Injury Blow
Manchester United have been hit by a major injury blow with the news that a key player is set to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
Manchester United have been hit by a major injury blow with Bastian Schweinsteiger set to miss the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, according to the Mirror.
Schweinsteiger linked up with the German national team earlier this week in preparation for their upcoming friendlies with England and Italy during the international break.
However, the 31-year-old suffered an injury to his right knee following a routine challenge during the final stages of Tuesday’s session and was subsequently forced to pull out of today’s session.
Instead, the United midfielder flew to Munich to see renowned specialist Dr. Muller-Wohlfahrt and undergo an MRI scan to determine the full extent of the injury.
Unfortunately, the results aren’t positive as Germany boss Joachim Low has confirmed that Schweinsteiger has suffered a tear to his medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
Speaking at his press conference this afternoon, Low is quoted by the Mirror as saying:
“Bastian Schweinsteiger has injured his medial collateral ligament, and is unavailable for both England and Italy,”
“It is the same injury that he suffered in England. It does not look very positive.”
A statement from the DFB said:
“The 31-year-old captain suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee following a challenge at the end of training on Tuesday afternoon. The diagnosis was confirmed following an MRI scan at the practice of team doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich earlier today.
“He will receive further treatment at his club Manchester United in consultation with the medical department of the national team.”
Schweinsteiger will now obviously miss Germany’s upcoming friendlies and while United are yet to state any specific time-frame over his recovery, the Mirror claim the midfielder is now set to miss the rest of the season.
The former Bayern Munich star recently missed over two months with a knee ligament injury so if he has suffered a similar problem, then it does appear likely that Schweinsteiger won’t play again this season and his participation at Euro 2016 could also be in doubt.
The news will come as a huge blow to United boss Louis an Gaal as he’s had to deal with a lengthy injury list for much of the season and Schweinsteiger’s absence will be sorely felt during the closing stages of the campaign.
United kept their top four hopes alive with a 1-0 win over rivals Manchester City on Sunday so van Gaal will be hoping his side can make-do without the experienced Germany midfielder to secure Champions League qualification come May.
