Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major injury boost with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen training ahead of Saturday’s clash with Liverpool.
Alderweireld missed Belgium’s friendly with Portugal on Tuesday night after being struck down with a bout of illness and was initially considered a doubt for Tottenham’s Premier League showdown with Liverpool this weekend.
However, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been handed a huge boost after revealing that the centre-back has made a swift recovery from the stomach bug and was able to take part in training in North London on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Argentinean coach confirmed that Alderweireld will be given a late fitness test after training on Friday but the Belgian international is expected to make Saturday’s trip to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
Attacker Erik Lamela will also be assessed after arriving back late from international duty with Argentina while Jan Vertonghen is also ‘very close’ to making his long-awaited return from a knee injury that’s kept him on the sidelines in recent weeks.
Vertonghen continued to work on his fitness in training this week but we’ll have to wait and see whether Pochettino decides to take a risk on the defender against Liverpool this weekend or give him more time to recover.
When asked for a team news update, Pochettino is quoted as saying by the clubs official Twitter account:
Mauricio: "We need to assess a few players like @ErikLamela, who only arrived back today, but we’re happy with how everyone has come back."

Alderweireld has been outstanding for Tottenham since joining the club from Southampton last summer so it will come as a huge relief that he’s available to face Liverpool this weekend.
Vertonghen’s imminent return will also come as a big boost heading in to the title run-in but the Belgian ace may have a fight on his hands regaining his first team place as Kevin Wimmer has performed admirably in his absence.
