Man Utd Star Could Make Surprise Injury Return Against Tottenham
Wayne Rooney has a surprise chance of returning to the squad for Manchester United’s crucial trip to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur this weekend
Wayne Rooney has a surprise chance of returning to the squad for Manchester United’s crucial trip to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, according to the Telegraph.
Rooney has been on the sidelines since sustaining knee ligament damage during United’s Premier League defeat at Sunderland on February 13 with a proposed comeback delayed last month after he suffered a setback in training.
The Red Devils skipper has been progressing well in his recovery in recent weeks with Louis van Gaal revealing at his press conference last Friday that Rooney had begun light training with a view to playing for the U21’s on Monday night.
However, the 30-year-old was left out of the side that drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford last night and it looks as though van Gaal could have been holding Rooney back for this weekend’s huge Premier League clash with Spurs.
The Telegraph claim that the striker will continue to step-up his rehabilitation in training this week and will undergo another scan in the next few days to see how well his knee injury has healed.
As long as there are signs of improvement, Rooney could yet make a surprise return for Sunday’s trip to White Hart Lane with van Gaal understood to have not given up hope of having his captain back in the squad this weekend.
It would be a huge boost for United to have Rooney back for such an important game as they head to North London desperately needing another win in order to leapfrog rivals Manchester City in to the top four.
Rooney’s fitness will be closely monitored over the coming week but United won’t take any chances with him so at this moment it still seems more likely that he’ll make his playing return for the U21’s against Middlesbrough next Monday.
If the striker came through that match unscathed, then Rooney could finally make his first team return either against West Ham in the FA Cup replay a week on Wednesday or against Aston Villa the following weekend.
