Arsenal Confident Of Signing Bundesliga Star After Tabling £24m Opening Bid

Arsenal are confident of reaching an agreement with Borussia Monchengladbach over the signing of Granit Xhaka after tabling an opening £24m offer for the holding midfielder, according to the Mirror.
Arsene Wenger has been heavily criticised for his recent lack of transfer activity with Mohamed Elneny and Petr Cech our only significant new additions this season and his position as manager has come under intense scrutiny after blowing our best chance of winning the title for over a decade.
However, despite the growing feeling among the clubs fanbase that his time should be up, Wenger seems certain to see-out the final year of his contract and it looks as though the boss is already planning his summer transfer activity.
The Mirror claim that after scouting Granit Xhaka over 30 times this season, Arsenal have stepped-up their interest in the midfielder after opening formal talks with Borussia Monchengladbach over a potential deal.
The newspaper states that we’ve submitted an opening offer worth £24m and while Gladbach rate the 23-year-old at nearer £32m, the report indicates that Arsenal chiefs are confident an agreement will be reached with the Bundesliga club.
Fans have been calling for Wenger to spend some of the clubs vast cash reserves on new talent and the signing of Xhaka would be something of a statement of intent as he’d be our third biggest ever signing behind Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
With Mathieu Flamini, Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta all set to leave when their contracts expire in June, Wenger needs to bring in at least one new midfielder this summer and Xhaka has emerged as one of his key targets in recent months.
We’ll have to wait and see whether an agreement can be found with Gladbach but the Mirror claim that Arsenal are determined to try and get a deal tied up as soon as possible to make Xhaka our first major signing of the summer.
The Swiss international has developed in to one of the most promising midfielders in German football since joining Gladbach from Basel in 2012 and despite his relatively young age, he’s known for his leadership qualities as well as his superb passing ability.

A lack of leadership is certainly something that Arsenal have been criticised for in recent years so Xhaka would be a welcome addition to the squad if we could bring him to the Emirates this summer.
