Wenger Discusses Szczesny’s Performance Versus United
Following Arsenal’s disappointing performance against Man Utd last night, one positive Gooners could take from the game was the assured display from young goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
The 19-year-old was making his premiership debut for Arsenal and after a couple of dodgy kicks early on, the nerves settled and the Pole made a couple of fine saves including a superb stop to deny Anderson and keep us in the game at 1-0. He came flying out ala Schmeichel making himself huge and blocking with his chest, it was a great save. Speaking after the game to Arsenal.com, Arsene Wenger claimed after the game he had no hesitation to throw Szczesny into the game despite his age.
Overall that was a good performance from Wojciech. [He looked a bit nervous] in his kicking in the first half but overall with his hands he didn’t make any mistakes. In this job you don’t look at the size of the game. When you have the quality, you play. Every big goalkeeper has started at 18 or 19 years of age. You had Van der Sar, I saw him when he was 18 and he played in big games.
I am really excited by Szczesny, he looks the real deal and unusually i was not nervous in the slightest when i found out Arsenal’s 19-year-old debutant was starting at Old Trafford last night. It was the opposite to be honest, i couldn’t wait to see him in action and i wasn’t disappointed.
