Champions League return – assessing Arsenal, Spurs, Man City & Leicester’s chances
Champions League football returns this week so we’ll assess how Arsenal, Leicester, Tottenham and Man City will get on in their opening group stage games
European club football’s top tournament returns this week with a number of highly anticipated Champions League clashes involving English teams.
Surprise 2016-17 Premier League winners Leicester make their competition bow at elite level, while Tottenham will step out at Wembley upon their return to the Champions League.
With both Arsenal and Manchester City also having tricky fixtures to overcome, a few smart Champions League tips are needed to predict the outcomes of the English teams’ games.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Arsenal
Arsenal have their toughest Group A game first up, with the Gunners travelling to the French capital to face Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes.
After an opening day defeat to Liverpool, Arsene Wenger’s men have improved week-on-week and are gathering a head of steam domestically.
PSG are seasoned campaigners in the Champions League and becoming Europe’s top team is the ultimate aim for the Ligue 1 giants.
However, things have not gone to plan since Unai Emery’s introduction in the summer with seven points from their first four games not an ideal return.
As such, it could be an excellent time for Arsenal to face PSG and the Gunners look like a tempting bet at odds of 18/5 to win.
Manchester City vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Pep Guardiola’s men are on a high after maintaining their 100 per cent start under the Catalan trainer with a 2-1 win in the Manchester derby on Saturday.
The former Bayern Munich chief will know Tuesday night’s opponents well given his three years in the Bundesliga and as such will be wary of the threat the visitors pose.
City are the only team to win all four of their Premier League games so far and there is good news on the injury front as a host of their stars are set to bolster Guardiola’s group.
Monchengladbach have started their new campaign with one win and a loss at the weekend, but odds will be against the Germans here.
Back City to win at odds of 1/2.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Monaco
Tottenham fans are chomping at the bit to see their side back in Europe’s top tournament, with a 80,000 contingent rumoured to be ready to turn out at Wembley for their Group E opener against Monaco.
Spurs are unbeaten in the Premier League so far in 2016-17 and got back to somewhere near their best with a commanding 4-0 win over Stoke City on Saturday.
These sides met in the Europa League last season, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men taking four points from two group games, including a 4-1 victory at White Hart Lane.
However, the Principality outfit sit on top of Ligue 1 currently and a 4-1 away win over Lille at the weekend reiterates the south coast club’s calibre.
A tough game to predict, back Spurs’ bumper fanbase to get their side over the line with three points at odds of 8/11.
Club Brugge vs Leicester City
Leicester City will make their debut in the Champions League with a trip to face Belgian side Club Brugge on Wednesday night.
The Foxes have been handed a group that is decidedly manageable on paper, giving the King Power Stadium outfit a realistic chance of progression to the knockout rounds.
Claudio Ranieri’s men have suffered something of a hangover from their momentous title win this season though and were duly put to the sword 4-1 by Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.
Brugge have themselves had a poor start to their new domestic campaign, picking up just seven points from six games, and as such Ranieri’s men will hope to start with a victory.
Back Leicester to win their opening Champions League fixture at odds of 53/35.
