Mesut Ozil saw his last gasp ‘goal’ ruled out for offside as Arsenal were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.
Having come in to the game on a seven-match winning streak and putting six past Ludogorets in midweek, Arsenal were heavy favourites to beat 17th-placed Boro on home soil.
However, we seemed to be suffering from a Champions League hangover as we started the game poorly and could have easily gone behind in the first half if not for the brilliance of Petr Cech in goal.
The Czech star made a superb stop to deny Alvaro Negredo before pulling off a point-blank save to keep out a far post header from Gaston Ramirez as the visitors had the better of the chances early on.
We improved after the break and Alexis Sanchez went close to opening the scoring as his long-range effort was well saved by Victor Valdes while Laurent Koscielny also narrowly missed the ball from close range.
We continued to push for a winner as the clocked ticked down and Mesut Ozil did have the ball in the back of the net in stoppage time but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside.
Therefore, we had to settle for a 0-0 draw which although sees us move top of the table by a single point from Manchester City, Arsene Wenger will certainly see it as two points dropped.
