Manchester United have suffered an injury scare ahead of their clash with Arsenal after a midfielder withdrew from international duty with a calf injury
Manchester United have suffered an injury scare ahead of their clash with Arsenal after Marouane Fellaini was forced to withdraw from the Belgian squad with a calf injury, according to the Mirror.
Fellaini played the full ninety minutes during United’s 3-1 victory over Swansea City on Sunday afternoon but it’s understood he picked up a calf injury at the at the Liberty Stadium.
The midfielder was allowed to meet up with the Belgian squad ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Estonia on Sunday and was checked over by his national teams medical staff.
However, the Mirror claim that while Fellaini’s injury isn’t thought to be too serious it’s enough to keep the 28-year-old out of action over the international break and he’s now been sent back to Manchester to be further assessed.
Fellaini is now expected to undergo treatment over the coming week and United are understood to be confident he’ll be fit to face Arsenal when the Gunners arrive at Old Trafford on November 19th later this month.
The former Everton midfielder certainly isn’t everyone’s cut of tea but he appears to have become Jose Mourinho’s ‘go-to guy’ for the big games as Fellaini has started against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea this season.
We’ll have to wait and see how the calf injury heals during the rest of the international break but it would come as no surprise if the Belgian was to line-up against Arsenal if he’s passed fit and available for selection.
Arsene Wenger has his own injury worries to contend with after Alexis Sanchez picked up a muscle injury during training with Chile yesterday and there are reports circulating that he is facing up to six weeks out.
