Chelsea are sweating over the fitness of Eden Hazard after the attacker limped out of Belgium’s 8-1 thrashing of Estonia on Sunday night.
Hazard once again started for his country in their latest World Cup qualifier and continued his fine form by getting himself on the scoresheet as Belgium took another step closer towards qualification to Russia 2018 with a resounding victory in Brussels.
However, the attacker provided Chelsea with a huge injury scare after asking to be substituted during the closing stages of the second half following an innocuous clash with Estonia’s Gert Kams.
Hazard received treatment from the Belgium medical team before limping off in the 74th minute and was replaced by Everton’s Kevin Mirallas for the final minutes of the game.
The news will have come as a concern to Chelsea boss Antonio Conte ahead of their trip to Middlesbrough this coming weekend as Hazard has rediscovered his best form this season with 7 goals and 2 assists to his name so far.
However, it looks as though the 25-year-old’s withdrawal last night may just have been precautionary as Belgium boss Roberto Martinez has provided an update by telling reporters that the attacker is fine and just received a kick to his calf.
Martinez is quoted as saying by the Daily Star:
“Eden Hazard has no injury, but received a kick on the calf,” said the Belgium boss.
I’m sure Conte will be breathing a huge sigh of relief as it would have been a huge blow to lose Hazard as we approach a pivotal part of the season with Chelsea right in the mix for the Premier League title.
