Alexis Sanchez has handed Arsenal a major fitness boost ahead of their trip to Manchester United after putting in a superb display during Chile’s 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Uruguay last night.
Sanchez was initially expected to miss Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford after suffering a low-grade hamstring injury in training last week and sat out Chile’s draw at Colombia last Thursday.
However, the 27-year-old has made a swift recovery and despite concerns from Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, Sanchez was declared fit and available for selection by Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi for their crucial World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
Sanchez started and showed no signs of being hindered by his hamstring problem as he proved to be the match-winner with two superb goals to help Chile to a vital 3-1 win.
Uruguay took the lead through Edinson Cavani before Eduardo Vargas pulled Chile level with a header with Sanchez then putting the hosts in front with a stunning shot from the edge of the area.
The Arsenal striker then raced clear in the 76th minute, held off two defenders before poking home the third to secure the three points. Sanchez was taken off in the 84th minute showing no sign of his hamstring injury so Arsene Wenger will be a relieved man.
It remains to be seen whether the Arsenal manager decides to risk Sanchez for Saturday’s clash at United but I’m sure the north Londoners will assess his hamstring problem when he arrives back from South American on Thursday.
