Mesut Ozil Offers Update On Arsenal Future & Clarifies Wenger’s Role In Decision
Mesut Ozil has offered an update on his contract situation at Arsenal and confirmed that Arsene Wenger’s future won’t play a role in his decision
Mesut Ozil has offered an update on his contract situation at Arsenal and confirmed that Arsene Wenger’s future won’t play a role in his decision, according to the Mirror.
Ozil is approaching the final year of his contract at Arsenal and so far we’ve been unable to agree terms over an extension despite holding lengthy discussions with his representatives.
It’s led to speculation the German international could be on the move this summer with the newspaper suggesting that Bayern Munich are keen to lure Ozil back to the Bundesliga this summer.
The Mirror claim that we’ve now offered the 28-year-old a new deal worth £280,000-a-week including bonuses, which if accepted would make Ozil the highest paid player in the clubs history.
However, while Ozil has confirmed talks have been held with Arsenal, the playmaker is yet to commit his future to the club and he insists his only focus is on finishing the current campaign.
Previous reports suggested that Ozil was waiting to see if Wenger signed a new contract before agreeing terms over his over extension, but Mesut has now dismissed that myth by confirming that his future does not depend on the Frenchman.
Ozil is quoted by the Mirror as telling Bild:
“Everything is open. We had talks with Arsenal. Right now I concentrate on the current season,”
“Arsene Wenger was one of the main reasons I joined Arsenal. But I know that sometimes things go very fast in football and that you can never plan something.
“This is why it would be wrong to say that my future depends on my coach.”
“You are never satisfied as a sportsman. You need the motivation.
“I want to win the Champions League one day, preferably with Arsenal. I have one more year on my contract here.”
It’s an interesting time for Ozil to distance his own future from Wenger’s considering the growing pressure on the manager to leave the club at the end of the season.
If Ozil wanted out, this would have been the perfect opportunity for him to align himself with Wenger and say how important it is that the boss remains at the club.
Then, if Wenger does leave, Ozil would have the perfect excuse to force a move, however, he’s chosen to distance himself from Arsene which to me suggests Mesut is keen to stay at Arsenal.

Ozil’s form has been questioned in recent weeks and the German has missed several games due to illness and I think the constant speculation surrounding his future has been affecting him.
However, he’s made two substitute appearances in our last two games so hopefully he can start to get his season back on track as there’s no doubt we’re a much better side with Ozil on top form.
