Man Utd Team News: Mourinho Confirms Double Blow As 5 Reds Miss Sunderland Trip
Jose Mourinho has confirmed a double injury blow with five players now missing for Man Utd’s trip to Sunderland this weekend.
Manchester United will look to keep the pressure on the top four when they take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Jose Mourinho has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s given ManUtd.com a team news and injury update.
The Red Devils boss has confirmed a double blow with the news that Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young are out of the trip to Tyneside this weekend due to injury.
Rooney hasn’t featured for United in recent weeks due to a knee injury while he missed the draw with Everton on Tuesday night due to ankle problems and is still not available this weekend.
Young started at right-back during the 1-1 draw in midweek but was forced off midway through the second half after picking up a knock and he too has been ruled out of the Sunderland game.
It means United will be without five first team players as the duo join Phil Jones, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling on the sidelines with the trio all nursing long-term injuries.
Jones suffered a toe injury while training with the England squad last month, Mata is unlikely to play again this season after undergoing groin surgery while Smalling picked up a knee injury during the international break.
Mourinho told the clubs website:
“Wayne Rooney is not available and Ashley Young is injured,”
“[There is] no more news, because [with] Mata, Smalling and Jones you already know that we are speaking about old injuries.”
United head in to the weekend action sitting sixth in the table following the draw with Everton but they can reclaim fifth with a positive result against Sunderland ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Crystal Palace on Monday.
