Man Utd Dealt Sickening Double Blow As Key Duo Ruled Out For Several Months
Man Utd have been dealt a sickening double injury blow with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo both ruled out for several months with serious injuries
Manchester United have been dealt a sickening double injury blow with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo both ruled out for several months with serious injuries, according to various reports.
Ibrahimovic limped off just minutes in to extra-time during United’s 3-2 aggregate win over Anderlecht in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night after landing awkwardly on his right knee.
Jose Mourinho admitted after the game that the injury looked serious but he was reluctant to speculate over how long the 35-year-old might be ruled out for until further tests were conducted.
ESPN FC are now one of several media outlets reporting that Ibrahimovic underwent scans on Friday which confirmed the striker has torn his anterior cruciate ligament while he may also have damaged his posterior cruciate too.
The Swedish super-star will now have surgery to repair the damage and initial time-scales suggest he will be out until at least January 2018, which must put his future at Old Trafford in serious doubt.
Ibrahimovic has met all the clauses to trigger a new contract with United but he’s yet to sign on the dotted line amid speculation he could be heading to the MLS – although any potential suitor must now have serious doubts about signing a 35-year-old who’s just suffered a serious knee injury.
The news will come as a huge blow to Mourinho as Ibrahimovic has been in superb form during his debut campaign in England having scored 28 goals in his 46 appearances since arriving on a free transfer from PSG.
United’s injury problems have deepened further with TeamTalk also reporting that Marcos Rojo has been sidelined for several months after also tearing his ACL.
The defender was stretchered off against Anderlecht on Thursday night after jarring his left knee and is now also due to undergo surgery which will see him ruled out until 2018.
It’s another devastating blow to Mourinho as he’s already without Phil Jones due to a toe injury while Chris Smalling is also still nursing a knee problem so United are down to the bare bones in central defence.
Daley Blind is expected to partner Eric Bailly at the back against Burnley on Sunday but Mourinho is desperate for Jones or Smalling to get fit as soon as possible as United look to continue their push for the top four and the Europa League.
