West Ham are in final negotiations over a deal to sign Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta on a free transfer this summer, according to Sky Sports News.
Zabaleta joined City from La Liga outfit Espanyol in 2008 and went on to become one of the best right-backs in the Premier League over the last nine years.
The Argentinean international made over 330 appearances for the Citizens, helping them win two Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup and 2 League Cups during his impressive career.
However, the 32-year-old is out-of-contract at the end of June and is set to leave the Etihad Stadium after making just 11 league starts under Pep Guardiola this campaign.
Zabaleta has been strongly linked with a move to West Ham in recent weeks and Sky Sports News are reporting today that the Hammers are now closing-in on a free transfer deal.
The report suggests that negotiations are now entering the final stages and Zabaleta is on the verge of becoming Slavan Bilic’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
Alvaro Arbeloa is set to leave the London Stadium when his contract expires next month so Bilic has been on the look-out for a replacement and it appears he’s found his man.
Zabaleta’s arrival would be a statement of intent from the Hammers as he’s a big-name in football and he’ll provide stiff competition for youngster Sam Byram at right-back next season.
The South American will obviously bring a huge amount of experience with him as well as a lot of quality so I think Zabaleta will be an excellent signing if West Ham manage to get it over the line.
The Londoners endured a difficult first season at their new home but it looks like the board is ready to back Bilic in the transfer market as they look to push on next year and I think Zabaleta would be a solid start to their summer business.
