Arsenal and Manchester United are ready to do-battle as the Premier League giants prepare huge bids for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl this summer, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.
Weigl joined Dortmund in 2015 after coming through the youth ranks at 1860 Munich and has developed in to one of the most exciting young midfielders in German football over the past two years.
The 21-year-old was virtually ever-present for Dortmund last season before picking up a nasty ankle injury but his potential appears to have caught the attention of some big clubs.
TuttoMercatoWeb are reporting that Arsenal and Manchester United are among those showing a keen interest in signing Weigl this summer after identifying the midfielder as a key target.
The Italian outlet suggests that Arsenal and United are ready to table ‘huge sums’ to sign the German international and Weigl is believed to be ready to test himself in a new league.
Barcelona are also named in the report as potential suitors but TuttoMercatoWeb claim Jose Mourinho is particularly interested in the young midfielder after failing to land Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
Mourinho needs to sign a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick and the United boss has been linked with a number of defensive midfielders this summer but it looks as though Weigl is now on his radar.
United obviously have the financial muscle to match any club in the world and they proved it yet again today after announcing the signing of striker Romelu Lukaku so you wouldn’t bet against them winning the race for Weigl’s signature.
However, Arsenal have also made a statement of intent in the market after breaking their transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette and Arsene Wenger could also do with a player to protect his often vulnerable defence.

Weigl would be an excellent signing for the Gunners, and indeed United, and I’d love to see him test himself here in England so hopefully we see him come to the Premier League this summer.
