Hoffenheim ensured it was a nervy final few minutes after Mark Uth broke the offside trap before firing a fine low shot past Simon Mignolet to make it 2-1 with just three minutes left.
Liverpool held on to secure a vital 2-1 away win meaning they are the heavy favourites to book their place in the group stages of the Champions League ahead of next weeks second leg at Anfield.
