Arsenal will be hoping to climb in to the top four with a positive result when they take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Arsene Wenger has provided a team news and injury update with the latest on Danny Welbeck, Shkodran Mustafi, David Ospina and Calum Chambers.
Welbeck has missed Arsenal’s last five games in all competitions since limping off with a groin injury during their 2-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road last month.
Wenger says the England international is recovering well but won’t be available this weekend meaning he’s targetting a return to action after the international break.
Ospina is back in training after missing Arsenal’s last three matches with a groin injury but he too is aiming to be available for the visit of Tottenham in two weeks time.
The Gunners will also continue to be without the services of Mustafi on Sunday as the defender is still working his way back from a hamstring injury that he suffered while away with Germany last month.
Chambers has been able to resume full training after recovering from a niggling hip injury that he sustained back in September but both he and Mustafi are expected to be fully fit after the upcoming international break.
Wenger told Arsenal.com:
on Welbeck and Ospina…
They are not far, Danny is not far and David is in training as well but the Man City game will come too early for them.on Mustafi…
City is too early as well for him, we have to be a bit more patient with him. Normally all three should be available after the international break.on Calum Chambers…
He is back in full training and available after the international break as well.
So Arsenal will be without Welbeck, Ospina, Mustafi and Chambers for the trip to the Etihad this weekend but all four players should be back in contention for the North London Derby later this month.
Wenger is expected to recall his big-guns this weekend after resting his first team regulars for the Europa League stalemate with Red Star Belgrade last night.
The Gunners head to Manchester sitting fifth in the table and a full nine points adrift of City so they need a positive result in order to keep alive their hopes of catching Pep Guardiola’s men.
