5-2-3: Mourinho To Make 7 Changes | Expected Man Utd XI vs Man City

Manchester United will be looking to cut Manchester City’s lead at the top of the Premier League table when they meet at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Here is the team I think Jose Mourinho will pick for the game:

Goalkeeper: Sergio Romero was given a run out in midweek but David De Gea is certain to get a recall and he’ll be looking to continue his fine form having produced a magnificent performance against Arsenal last week.

Defence: United have gone with a back five in recent weeks and it’s worked well from them so I can see Mourinho sticking with the formation against City.

Phil Jones is back in contention after recovering from a thigh injury and he was a regular under Mourinho until he picked up the problem last month so I think he might get an immediate recall.

Victor Lindelof is the man most likely to make way despite putting in some solid performances of late as Chris Smalling should keep his place in the defence.

Marcos Rojo wasn’t risked against CSKA so he could get a recall after impressing since returning to fitness while Antonio Valencia should retain his place in the right wing-back role.

Luke Shaw impressed on his first start of the season in midweek but I still think we’ll see Ashley Young recalled to the starting eleven on Sunday afternoon.

Midfield: Mourinho says Nemanja Matic is ‘injured’ but will still start this weekend so it will be interesting to see if the Serbian international is able to complete the full ninety minutes.

Paul Pogba starts his three-match suspension following his sending off against Arsenal so Mourinho has a void to fill in midfield. Marouane Fellaini is facing a late fitness test and he could come in if passed fit but Ander Herrera seems like the most likely option.

Attack: Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been declared fit so he should return to the bench after recovering from muscle fatigue with Romelu Lukaku once again leading the line up front.

Jesse Lingard has forced his way in to Mourinho’s first team of late and he’ll be hoping for a recall after being rested in midweek having scored a superb goal at Arsenal.

Anthony Martial could be favourite to start in the final attacking position as Marcus Rashford played against CSKA while the likes of Juan Mata and the out-of-favour Henrikh Mkhitaryan will vie for places on the bench.

Here is how we think United will line-up:
