Liverpool take on Porto in the first leg of their Champions League clash tonight. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Liverpool will be looking to bring home a positive result from the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash with Porto this evening.
The Reds warmed up for the game with a 2-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday to move to within just two points of second-placed Manchester United in the Premier League table.
However, the focus will be on Champions League matters tonight and Liverpool booked their place in the knockout stages of the competition after topping Group E with a record of 3 wins and 3 draws from their 6 group stage games.
The Merseysiders will now face a Porto side that are unbeaten in their last 23 matches in all competitions and lost just one of their group games en route to finishing second behind Besiktas in Group G.
Jurgen Klopp knows this is a tricky away leg but if they can bring home a positive result then Liverpool should be confident of finishing the job at Anfield in the second leg.
Team news
Liverpool will be without Emre Can due to suspension so Jordan Henderson is expected to be recalled in the middle of the park tonight.
Joe Gomez has travelled but will be handed a late fitness test after recently returning to training from an ankle injury while Ragnar Klavan is also back in contention.
Nathaniel Clyne is back in training after recovering from a long-term back injury but the right-back is still not available for selection just yet.
Porto will be praying top scorer Vincent Aboubakar passes a late fitness test on a muscle injury while Marcano, Danilo and Andre Andre are also doubts for the game.
Expected line-ups
Predicted Score
Porto 1-2 Liverpool: The Estadio do Dragao is never an easy place to go as Porto have an excellent home record, however, this is one of the weakest Porto teams I’ve seen in recent years. They were fortunate to get through a relatively easy group and I don’t think they’ll be able to handle Liverpool’s attack on the break. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in particular are in sensational form and I’m backing them to fire Liverpool to a vital away win.
