Liverpool take on Porto in the Champions League at Anfield this evening. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Liverpool will look to finish the job and book their place in the quarter finals of the Champions League when Porto arrive at Anfield this evening.
The Reds head in to the match holding a commanding lead after thrashing Porto 5-0 in the first leg over in Portugal last month so it would take a catastrophic collapse for the Merseysiders to throw it away.
Jurgen Klopp’s side warmed up for the game with a routine 2-0 victory over Newcastle at the weekend which saw them briefly move up to second position in the Premier League table.
However, Manchester United regained second spot with a last gasp win at Crystal Palace last night so Liverpool will be forgiven for having one eye on Saturday’s huge trip to Old Trafford.
Team news
Gini Wijnaldum returned to training yesterday but Klopp has suggested the midfielder isn’t ready to return after being struck down by illness over the past week.
Nathaniel Clyne is working his way back to full fitness but is unlikely to feature tonight so Joe Gomez could return at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold given a rest.
Klopp will be tempted to rest some of his key men ahead of the United game so we could see Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Emre Can, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson given a breather.
That would open the door for the likes of Adam Lallana, Joal Matip, Alberto Moreno, James Milner and Dominic Solanke to get some game time.
As for Porto, they’ll be without Tiquinho Soares, Moussa Marega and Alex Telles for the game while Danilo Pereira also continues to miss out.
Expected line-ups
Predicted Score
Liverpool 2-0 Porto: It will be interesting to see how both teams approach this game but the fact is no team has ever progressed after losing the home first leg 5-0 in the Champions League so obviously Liverpool are in a strong position. The Reds are unbeaten against Porto in their five meetings and I don’t think that record is under threat tonight. I’m going for a routine 2-0 home win.
