Liverpool take on Man City at Anfield in their Champions League clash tonight. Here is a preview with the latest team news, line-ups and prediction
Liverpool will be looking to take control of their Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City when they meet for the first leg at Anfield this evening.
Both clubs have huge derbies coming-up at the weekend with Liverpool taking on Everton while City can wrap-up the title if they beat Man Utd but the focus will be on Champions League matters tonight.
The Reds reached the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2008 – when they lost to Chelsea – after thrashing Porto 5-0 over two legs in the previous round.
City on the other hand eased past Basel to reach the quarter-finals and Pep Guardiola will be out for revenge tonight as Liverpool are the only side to have beaten the Citizens in the Premier League this season.
The Reds won 4-3 at Anfield back in January to end any hopes of City going the campaign unbeaten so no doubt Guardiola will want to put the record straight this evening.
Team news
Liverpool were dealt a huge blow ahead of the game after Joel Matip was ruled out for the season with a thigh injury that he picked up during the comeback win at Crystal Palace last weekend.
Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez are also sidelined so Dejan Lovren will start alongside Virgil van Dijk while Emre Can is expected to miss out with a back injury.
Adam Lallana picked up a hamstring injury at the weekend so he’s been ruled out for a few weeks but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is pushing for recall in midfield.
City will continue to be without striker Sergio Aguero due to injury but Fabian Delph is available again after returning to full fitness and could return at left-back.
Expected line-ups
Predicted Score
Liverpool 2-1 Man City: City thrashed Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad earlier in the season but the Reds won the last encounter 4-3 at Anfield and are always confident on home soil. Anfield is a special place on big Champions League nights and Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 14 European home games. I don’t see that run ending tonight, even against this City side, and I actually think Liverpool might nick a 2-1 win.
