Liverpool booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League with a superb 2-1 victory at the Etihad that secured a 5-1 aggregate win over the two legs.
The Reds went in to the game holding a 3-0 advantage following their stunning win at Anfield last week but the Merseysiders got off to the worst possible start.
City came flying out the blocks and scored an early goal as Gabriel Jesus made it 1-0 on the night with a neat finish after the hosts ripped through Liverpool’s back line in the 3rd minute.
Pep Guardiola’s side should have made it 2-0 shortly before half time when Leroy Sane poked home but the referee ruled him offside despite the fact the ball had come off James Milner.
It proved to be the turning point in the game as Liverpool got an all-important away goal when Mohamed Salah made it 1-1 with a lovely finish in the 56th minute.
It meant City had to score four more to progress so the belief had gone from the hosts and Liverpool wrapped things up when Roberto Firmino made it 1-2 on the night in the 77th minute.
The win secured an impressive 5-1 aggregate victory for Jurgen Klopp’s side and they have now booked their place in the last four of the Champions League along with Roma – who stunned Barcelona 3-0 in tonight’s other game.
