Arsenal Injury Update: Wenger Explains Why Ramsey, Ozil, etc Missed Newcastle Defeat
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that a cut leg ruled Aaron Ramsey out of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that a cut leg ruled Aaron Ramsey out of Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park this afternoon.
Ramsey sustained a nasty cut to his lower leg during our 2-2 draw with CSKA Moscow in the second leg of our Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night.
The Welsh international needed lengthy treatment in the changing room shortly before half time but was able to complete the full ninety minutes and even scored a late equaliser.
However, Ramsey later shared a photo on Instagram showing the gruesome cut that required several staples to close the wound and it was impressive that he was able to complete the match against CSKA while carrying such an injury.
Ramsey was left out of today’s squad for the trip to Newcastle along with the likes of Hector Bellerin, Laurent Koscielny, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere as we slumped to another disappointing away defeat.
Wenger has confirmed that while the likes of Bellerin, Ozil, Koscielny and Wilshere were all rested, Ramsey wasn’t available for selection as he couldn’t get any contact on his leg injury.
The boss told Arsenal.com:
on if the team changes were down to players being rested…
Some were injured and some were rested because they had not recovered from the number of games we’ve played recently.on who’s injured…
Ramsey had a wound and couldn’t get into any contact. The rest are little knocks and recovery tests, which weren’t good enough.
We certainly missed our key players today as we were hugely disappointing at St James’ Park. Alexandre Lacazette gave us an early lead but poor defending saw us throw it away with Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie sealing a 2-1 win for the Geordies.
The boys now have a week to rest and Ramsey’s wound can hopefully heal before we take on West Ham at the Emirates but you’d expect Wenger to rest his key players again next Sunday as that match is just a few days before we take on Atletico Madrid.
