Liverpool will look to maintain their place at the top of their Champions League group when they take on Red Star Belgrade in Serbia on Tuesday night. Here is the team we think Jurgen Klopp will select:
Goalkeeper: This is a must-win game for Liverpool so Klopp won’t be taking any chances over his goalkeeper. Therefore, Alisson will continue between the sticks with Simon Mignolet once again on the bench.
Defence: Dejan Lovren missed the 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Saturday evening with a knock but the Croatian international has travelled to Belgrade and could be recalled alongside Virgil van Dijk in the middle of defence. That could see Joe Gomez moved to right back with Trent Alexander-Arnold the unfortunate one to drop out.
Alberto Moreno is pushing for a recall after being given a rare run-out against Cardiff City last week but I think it’s safe to say Andrew Robertson will keep his place at left-back tomorrow night.
Midfield: Naby Keita is back in contention after recovering from a hamstring injury that’s kept him out of the last five games in all competitions and the Guinea international could be recalled in midfield if Klopp feels he’s fully match fit.
James Milner was excellent against Arsenal at the weekend so I expect he’ll keep his place tomorrow. Fabinho wasn’t at his best at the Emirates but the Brazilian had done superbly well in previous games so I think he’ll once again be deployed in the holding role.
Therefore, Georginio Wijnaldum could be the man to make way against Red Star Belgrade while Jordan Henderson remains on the sidelines with a niggling hamstring problem that he picked up last month.
Attack: Liverpool have decided to leave Xherdan Shaqiri in England amid fears over the type of welcome he’d get from the passionate Serbian support given the attacker’s Kosovan heritage.
Daniel Sturridge may be hoping for a recall as Roberto Firmino has been in poor of late but I think Klopp will stick with the Brazilian international up front tomorrow night.
Liverpool thrashed Red Star 4-0 at Anfield in the reverse fixture but they’ll know this will be an entirely different prospect at the Marakana Stadium so I don’t think Klopp will take any chances with his line-up.
That means Mohamed Salah is expected to retain his place in the attack while Sadio Mane should once again line-up on the left with the likes of Adam Lallana and Divock Origi having to make do with a place on the bench.
Here is how I think Liverpool will line up:
