Manchester United came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw with Arsenal in a feisty clash at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
United began on the front foot but it was Arsenal who opened the scoring in the 26th minute as David De Gea failed to deal with a Shkodran Mustafi header properly and the ball dropped just over the line despite the attempted clearance of Ander Herrera.
Arsenal’s lead didn’t last long as United equalised just four minutes later but there was some controversy around the goal. Bernd Leno palmed away a free-kick to Herrera – who was just offside – and the midfielder cut back for Anthony Martial to fire home for 1-1.
The Gunners resorted their lead in the 68th minute when Alexandre Lacazette came off the bench to score a bizarre goal under pressure from United defender Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo.
However, United hit back immediately as they equalised just 13 seconds from the restart. Sead Kolasinac failed to deal with a simple long ball and Jesse Lingard stabbed home for 2-2.
Arsenal went close to winning it when De Gea denied Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while Henrikh Mkhitaryan had a goal ruled out for offside as the two sides settled for a draw.
The result leaves Arsenal in fifth – level on points with Chelsea – while United are eight points back in eighth place.
