Man Utd team news: Solskjaer confirms injured duo could return for Liverpool clash
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to receive a double injury boost ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
Manchester United will be looking to tighten their grip on fourth place with a win when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s provided a team news and injury update including the latest on Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.
Martial missed Monday night’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Chelsea after being forced off during United’s Champions League last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain with a groin injury.
Lingard also failed to make the trip to Stamford Bridge on Monday after suffering a hamstring injury during the first half of the 2-0 loss to the French champions last week.
However, Solskjaer has confirmed the pair have a chance to recover in time to return to the squad against Liverpool on Sunday. The Man Utd boss is hopeful the attacking duo will resume training today and put themselves in contention to face the Merseysiders this weekend.
Solskjaer told ManUtd.com:
“I hope and think Anthony will be ready and I hope Jesse will be ready because it’s two different injuries,”
“So maybe more hope than think, with Anthony as well, but he’s got a chance. Anyway, we still hope Jesse could be ready. Let’s see. We’ve still got a couple of days’ training left and they need to be part of it.”
“They’ve not been part of it yet, but they’ve been doing some recovery work and Anthony’s was a different muscle, of course, so we think that he might be ready and hope that Jesse will.”
We’ll have to wait and see whether Martial or Lingard are passed fit to face Liverpool but Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku are on stand-by to deputise in attack if either player is once again ruled out.
Solskjaer didn’t offer any update on Matteo Darmian or Antonio Valencia so it looks like the full-backs remain on the sidelines this weekend as United look to cement their position in the top four with a positive result on Sunday.
