Liverpool are in the race to sign German star Kai Havertz but Bayer Leverkusen are demanding at least £90m to sell the attacking midfielder this summer, according to Bild.
Havertz has been with Leverkusen his entire career and has emerged form their youth ranks to become one of the hottest properties in European football since breaking into their first team three years ago.
The 20-year-old enjoyed a sensational campaign last season that saw him contribute 20 goals and 7 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions and he’s already been capped by the senior German squad having previously represented his country at youth level.
Understandably, Havertz has caught the attention of Europe’s elite clubs with Bild claiming that Liverpool have expressed their interest in signing the midfielder along with the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
However, any deal for the attacking midfielder won’t be cheap as the German publication says Leverkusen will demand at least £90m [€100m] to cash-in on their star man this summer.
The Bundesliga outfit are under no pressure to sell as Havertz still has three years left to run on his current contract so the likes of Liverpool, Bayern and Barca are going to have to be prepared to dig deep if they want to prise him away from the BayArena.
The links to Havertz come after Jurgen Klopp hinted he may dip into the market for another new signing before the transfer window closes in less than three weeks time.
Liverpool have only signed one player so far – teenage defender Sepp van den Berg – but Klopp has been tipped to recruit a versatile attacker and the German coach has admitted he’s considering strengthening his squad before the start of the new season.
Klopp is quoted as saying by the Mirror:
“I’m happy with the team, we are really happy. We have to see if we find maybe one position, if we find something for it, but there’s no real pressure because it’s not about signing a player. We have solutions for all the situations.
“Do we have exactly the solution that everybody from outside would be 100 per cent happy? I don’t think so because people want to have world-class here, world-class here and the guy on the bench has to be world-class as well.
“That’s not so easy. But we are of course working on it.”
Havertz would be a sensational signing for Liverpool if they could pull it off as he’s one of the best technical players in Germany and is comfortable playing as a central attacking midfielder or out on the wing.
