Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in signing Manchester United target Sander Berge, according to 90min.
Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in signing Manchester United target Sander Berge, according to 90min.
The Norwegian international has emerged as one of the most highly-rated youngsters in European football since joining Genk in 2017 with the defensive midfielder putting-in a string of impressive displays for club and country.
The 21-year-old’s potential has caught the eye of several top clubs with 90min claiming that Man Utd have identified Berge as a target while a number of other big Premier League teams have been keeping an eye on his progress.
One such club appears to be Liverpool as boss Jurgen Klopp admitted Berge was a ‘very interesting player’ after he impressed during Genk’s two Champions League group stage games against the Merseysiders this season.
Following Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Genk earlier this month, Berge admitted it was a ‘dream’ for him to play at Anfield and suggested he would love to play regularly at the stadium. Berge is quoted as saying by 90min:
“Playing at Anfield is a dream for everyone in the world, and not least for Norwegians. Liverpool are the best team and has the most fans. So I could definitely plan to play at Anfield as often as possible.”
Berge might get his wish as Genk sporting director Dimitri De Conde has now confirmed Liverpool’s interest in signing the talented defensive midfielder – although the Reds face further competition from Napoli.
De Conde is quoted as telling Radio Punto Nuovo via 90min:
“Napoli are interested in Sander, it’s a possibility. We also know that Liverpool are also interested.
“There are clubs in Italy who are following Berge and Napoli could be one of them, but at this stage, there are no offers on the table. From next week, things could change.”
Berge is under contract at Genk until 2021 and 90min suggests that the Belgian outfit value him at around £25m – a figure that shouldn’t deter clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United.
The 6ft 5in star plays in the deep-lying midfield position so he’d face a tough task forcing his way into Klopp’s starting eleven if he does end up joining Liverpool considering Fabinho’s superb form this season but he’d be an excellent squad player.
Man Utd are more desperately in need of a defensive midfielder as Nemanja Matic is being strongly linked with a move away from Old Trafford so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may view Berge as a potential replacement.
