The Future of Danny Welbeck….
It is no secret that Steve Bruce would love to keep him at Sunderland where he has been a revelation when available in his first proper season in the Premier League. Bruce has stated since before Christmas that he wants Welbeck to stay on and this week claimed that it is his number one priority this summer. His plan is to fill Fergie full of drink to force the signature!
In my opinion no matter how drunk he gets Sir Alex he still does not have a hope of signing Danny Welbeck. Ferguson revealed earlier on in the week that players such as Welbeck, Cleverley and Diouf will be returning to Old Trafford in the summer and they are very much part of his plans.
Welbeck is a player who has excited me for years now. He scored bagfuls of goals for the Reserves and the Under 18′s winning the Reserves Player of the Year trophy on the way. Previously when I wrote the 7 United Starlets series I would have definitely had Welbeck at the top of my list but he had already played 24 games for the first team scoring 5 times which ruled him out.
On his Premier League debut against Stoke City he came on as a substitute. I was watching the game with another United fan and a Chelsea fan who didn’t know that much about him. I said to them watch this lad he is a special talent. The first thing Welbeck did was give the ball away and of course I got mocked! I stuck to my guns though and Welbeck received the ball just inside the attacking half played a clever one two, and took a shot from 30 yards out scoring an absolute peach. Best of all I got to say the words we all love to say “I told you so”!
His loan move to Sunderland this season has proven to me, and I’m sure Ferguson too, that the kid is a very special talent who should not be sold! He has come on leaps and bounds, he looks nothing like the skinny kid who played for the Reserves and has added muscle to his frame. He is strong, skillful, powerful and has an eye for goal scoring 6 goals in 9 games for Sunderland before an injury curtailed his appearances.
He has come back from the injury looking sharp again and although his England call up may be just to stop him thinking about playing for Ghana it proves that the England management rate him too.
Hopefully next season he will return to United (he is a local lad too) and be part of our first team. I can see him, Hernandez, Rooney and Berbatov being the main strikers with Macheda and Diouf surplus to requirements.
What do you think? Do you share my thoughts? Who would you prefer in the squad Macheda or Welbeck?
