Liverpool battling with Arsenal to sign Newcastle’s Gordon

Liverpool are reportedly battling with Arsenal over a deal to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon, as per Football Insider.

Although the Reds have been unbeaten in their last ten Premier League matches, they have won only four of those games. Arne Slot’s side have drawn the last four consecutive league matches, with last weekend’s disappointing draw against struggling Burnley at Anfield once again increasing the pressure on the Dutch boss.

Rememore new hair

Currently, the Merseyside club are fourth in the league with 36 points from 22 matches, sitting 14 points behind table topper Arsenal. So, it is almost certain that Liverpool won’t be able to defend their Premier League title once again.

On the other hand, Slot’s side are currently only one point behind fifth-placed Manchester United; therefore, they are at risk of losing the Champions League spot.

Meanwhile, with Cody Gakpo struggling to showcase his best this season and Alexander Isak set to remain sidelined for a few months due to a serious injury, Liverpool have seemingly started exploring options to strengthen the frontline this year.

Football Insider state that Liverpool are interested in signing a left-winger and hold a long-standing interest in Gordon. So, they could make a concrete approach to secure his service should Newcastle open the door to his departure.

Following the Englishman’s underwhelming performances this season, the Magpies are prepared to let him leave if they receive a big offer to balance the books, with Eddie Howe looking to upgrade the left side of the attack.

Battle

Liverpool signed Isak from Newcastle for a British record fee following a prolonged transfer saga last summer, and it remains to be seen whether they raid Howe’s side once again this year.

However, the report state that Arsenal are also long-term admirers of the Englishman; therefore, Liverpool will have to overcome stiff competition to finalise the operation.

Gordon, valued at around £52m by Transfermarkt, likes to be deployed in the left-wing position. Although he has netted eight goals across all competitions thus far, six of those coming from the penalty spot.

So, it might be a huge risk for Arsenal or Liverpool should they eventually opt to secure his services by paying a big transfer fee this year, given his recent dip in form.
