Huge boost to Liverpool as top star commits to club
By Football Talk.
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has brushed off speculation that he wants out of Anfield by saying he expects to sign a new contract in the next few weeks.
Barcelona are one of several clubs to be linked to the defensive midfielder in recent months and with Liverpool having a disastrous season in the premier league as well as suffering an early exit from the champions league, it was suggested that Mascherano would leave the club.
“The club are talking with my agents,” said Mascherano
“I don’t like to be involved in the contract meetings so I leave that to my agents and the people at the club.
“Liverpool know I want to stay. I don’t think it will be difficult to arrive at a deal and we will see what happens in the next few weeks.”
“I have never said I was not happy at Liverpool. That was the press,”
“I am happy here and the only way I can show that is with my performances on the pitch.
“I always try to do everything I can to help my team-mates and manager.
“Sometimes I can do well and sometimes I can’t, but I always look to give 100 per cent in training and in games.”
This news is a boost Liverpool fans who have endured a tough season and with champions league qualification for next season looking unlikely, there is going to be speculation about all of their star players during the summer so to have a player as influential as Mascherano commit his future to Liverpool will be a huge relief.
Securing the future of Mascherano will also be an important part of Rafa Benitez’s rebuilding for next season and may go some way to persuade fellow star players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to stay at Liverpool is they do miss out on fourth spot this year.
