TRANSFER NEWS: Liverpool Beat Rivals To Sign Centre Back Jones

Following missing out on Blackburn defender Phil Jones, Liverpool have gone on and signed his namesake, Lloyd Jones from Plymouth.

According to The Daily Mirror, “Jones (Lloyd, not Phil) impressed Liverpool during a trial at the end of the season and Dalglish took time out from chasing his big-money targets to talk the kid into signing.” Lloyd Jones is in fact, like Phil Jones, a centerback and he is in fact a Welshman that Liverpool managed to sign from Plymouth.

Liverpool were able to pull together a deal easily because Plymouth are currently cash-strapped and are seeking any form of money necessary to avoid declaring themselves as bankrupt, which will thus result in administration and as a point deduction.

The fee is quoted to be ‘a 6 figure compensation fee’. Other than Liverpool, other clubs such as Everton were interested in the Welshman, but the allure of Liverpool FC’s history swayed him in favour of signing for the red half of Merseyside instead of Liverpool’s neighbours.

At 15 years of age, Jones will add some youth to Liverpool’s already pretty young side and apparently has been brought in to forge a long term partnership with the already proven right back Martin Kelly, whom prefers a role at the heart of the defence.
