United Ace Not phased By New Signings
Manchester United defender Jonny Evans claims he’s welcomed recent signing’s Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, despite the increased competition at Old Trafford, and is even helping out the young pair.
Despite being only 23-years-old, Evans has been plying his trade at the top level for longer than two of United’s latest recruits, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, both 21 and 19 respectively.
Both have been making a huge impact at Old Trafford since their respctive arrivals, and the Northern Ireland international believes he should be helping the newer faces in the squad.
“I guess I’m still classed in the young bracket but I do have a bit of experience,” Evans told United Review.
“And, when I’m on the pitch, I want to try and help some of the newer faces.”
“It’s my fourth season at the club since I went out on loan at Sunderland, so I feel like there’s advice I should be trying to pass on to the young guys.
“I can’t just sit back and continue to let other people show me the ropes. I’ve been here long enough to be beyond that point now.”
The arrival of Jones in the summer, along with the form of Smalling, has increased competition at United but Evans is happy with the situation.
“There’s always been stiff competition here and Phil Jones joining the club certainly hasn’t made me think any differently,” he added.
“I’ve just made sure I’ve got my head down and I’ve worked really hard.
“I’ve never been one for craving attention. If I know that I’ve given 100 per cent, then that’s all that matters.
“I don’t really listen to what other people might be saying – good or bad – about my performances. Of course, the opinion that really counts is the manager’s.”
