Wenger: “Arsenal Could Have Signed Tottenham Ace”
Arsene Wenger admits Arsenal considered a move for Tottenham’s Luka Modric before he joined their local rivals.
The Croatian was linked with a move to the Emirates before he completed his £16million move to White Hart Lane back in 2008, and Wenger admitted he was close to making a bid for the playmaker but held back because the Gunners already had Cesc Fabregas. He said:
“We knew Modric before Tottenham knew him. We played against Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League and he played in the same team as Eduardo against us.
“At the time we had Cesc Fabregas, not a bad player. But we were interested in Modric.”
Spurs famously beat off a £40million Chelsea bid for Modric while Arsenal sold Fabregas to Barcelona for £40m. But Wenger said:
“Do you think they would have sold Modric if he had one year left on his contract like Fabregas?”
