Wenger doesn’t know if he will sign new Arsenal contract
By Fab4.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied speculation that he has already signed a new 2-year contract extension and has even said he doesn’t know if he will decide to stay on with the Gunners. Recent reports had suggested Wenger had agreed a new 2-year deal and some saying he had even put pen to paper, but speaking after Arsenal’s 4-0 defeat of Fulham,
“At the moment I have not extended,” he said. “I am very happy with my Club and I am always respecting my contracts. But if I extend it and when I don’t know yet.”
Not exactly convincing stuff from the boss there. Saying ‘if’ he extends it he doesn’t know certainly puts some doubt on whether he will remain Arsenal manager beyond his current deal which expires in 2011. I am almost certain he will sign on and this is just the usual coy Wenger we all know. It is unlikely he would walk away from his project even if Arsenal were to win a trophy next season. He would be letting a lot of players down. Chief Exec Ivan Gazidis is also confident Arsene will extend his stay.
“I think everybody knows that the board has always backed Arsène and believes in him totally,” he told the Official Matchday Programme.
“Arsène, in return has a great love for the Club. There’s no dimming in his desire and I’ve no doubt that we’ll extend his contract, but we’ll do that very quietly and with the minimum of fuss.
“When it’s appropriate to make an announcement we will do so.”
It remains to be seen how Arsenal fans feel about Wenger staying on beyond his current contract. I assume a lot will be swayed by how the boss recruits this summer and whether we can end a 5 year trophy drought.
