AGENT – “I’ve Spoken With Arsenal, Chelsea & Liverpool”
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have held initial talks about Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to the players agent.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have held initial talks about Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to the players agent.
The 25-year-old centre back has been a hugely impressive figure at the heart of Madrid’s defence, and also helped Uruguay to the Copa America in the summer.
His form has lead to interest from all over Europe, with Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool all linked with the defender in recent months. According to the players agent, Diego Heredia Triguero, all three have enquired about his client but as yet no official offers have been submitted. Triguero told Calciomercato.com
“As I said, Godin is talked about a lot in England, there are clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal who are also quite careful about certain players,”
“I’ve spoken a little to all of them. But real negotiations have not yet been launched.”
Its widely accepted that Chelsea are on the look-out for defensive reinforcements following a disappointing start to the season. Brazilian centre back Alex is also set for a January exit, leaving Andre Villas-Boas short of options at the back, so a move for Godin could be on the cards.
Arsenal and Liverpool’s interest is a little more surprising given neither club are thought to be actively looking to sign a defender this January. Arsene Wenger signed Per Mertesacker in the summer and also has the improving Laurent Koscielny and vice captain Thomas Vermaelen to call upon. While Kenny Dalglish signed Godin’s fellow countryman, Sebastian Coates in the summer and also has Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel as centre back options.
