The FA have confirmed that an independent panel have dismissed Manchester City’s appeal against defender Vincent Kompany’s red card against Manchester United.

Kompany was shown a controversial straight red for a tackle on United winger Nani during Sunday’s FA Cup tie at the Etihad Stadium.

City decided to appeal the decision but the FA have today dismissed that appeal and their captain will now serve a four-match suspension with immediate effect. An automatic three-match suspension for Serious Foul Play, with an additional game due to this being Kompany’s second red card of the season.

He will now miss both legs of the Carling Cup semi final with Liverpool, the trip to face Wigan and the home tie with Tottenham.
