Rodgers Confirms Interest In £16m Midfielder

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed his interest in signing Swansea midfielder Joe Allen, but it may take a fee in the region of £16m to land him.

With the summer transfer window in full swing, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, Liverpool confirm their interest in Joe Allen.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed his interest in bringing Swansea midfielder Joe Allen to Anfield this summer, but it may take a fee in the region of £16m to land him.

Allen was one of Swansea’s most consistent performers during Rodgers time at the Liberty Stadium and after taking over the reigns at Anfield, the midfielder was quickly linked with a move to Merseyside, according to ESPN.

New Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is desperate to keep hold of Allen but his former boss has opened the door for a move to Liverpool after revealing his admiration for the player.

“I have a great relationship with Swansea, but if there is a market for any of the players I would like to be in that market,” Rodgers said.

“He [Allen] is a very talented player, which everyone knows, but there is nothing more at the moment. When players come to a club such as Liverpool, it’s never straightforward.

“As a manager you want them in sooner rather than later, but the main thing is to get them in before the beginning of the season. If we do that, our job will be done.”

Rodgers is quoted as saying by ESPN

However, the Daily Mail suggest it would take a fee similar to the £16m paid to Sunderland for Jordan Henderson to prize the 22-year-old away from Swansea.

An apparent ‘source’ told the newspaper:

“Brendan is a huge fan of Joe, and has seen at first hand just how magnificently he has performed for Swansea over the past couple of seasons.

“Joe was a key player in helping them win promotion from the Championship, and was outstanding again in the Premier League last term.

“He has established himself as one of the top flight’s outstanding young talents, and he is very happy at Swansea.

“The fact is they want him to remain at the Liberty, but they are also well aware that Liverpool paid £16m to sign Jordan Henderson – another promising young midfielder – last summer.

“Joe has to be put in the same price bracket as that.”

If the Daily Mail are accurate, it looks like it’s going to take a sizable offer to make the Swans part company with Allen. But would the Liverpool board sanction spending £16m on another English youngster who’s not yet established himself at the very top of the game? Henderson has hardly been a rousing success, so unless they can persuade Swansea to lower their expectations it’s going to be difficult to see Allen moving to Anfield.

This guy Rodgers is no different from Comolli and Dalglish ! He is willing to grossly overpay for mid-talent.Since when has Joe Allen been worth £16M ? Rubbish as it is simply another sort of NUFC ” we saw LFC coming so trebled the ante – Of course they will pay it as they are idiots in business” thing ! I give up…

you give up and you abuse our manager…yet so far the only official signing Rodgers done so far was a bargain 10m for Borini 🙂

Hardly a bargain. £6-7M would have been more like it.

I’m not sure Rodgers has any say in the actual price, but Swansea will obviously try and get top dollar because of the “gentleman’s agreement” that appears to have been conveniently forgotten.

The proposed fee for Dempsey worries me a lot more than Allen’s, as he could honestly be worth £25-30M in a few years’ time.

25-30mn, mate British isles are now minnows of global football hierarchy. Players like Allen are found in dozens in France, Germany, Italy or Holland (notto mention Spain or the 2 big Latinos). By the way, is Allen “Home Grown”?, otherwise he ‘ll not play for a CL team (or other way, the team where Allen starts as CM/AM is not good enough to qualify CL).

Another big fish in a small pond like Charlie “Championship Zizu” Adam. 7-8mn at best & if Swansea don’t release him whenhisstake is at pick, they ll regret (by the way, don’t bring Lucas’s example, that man starts for Brazil, not Wales)

Man before you type anything else learn to spell and speak. Your comments make no sense. Give Rogers a chance, he wont spend money like the King did. To put in SIMPLE ENGLISH…….. He does not have any money to spend.

£16 million, what a joke. He was valued at about £8 – £10 million before Liverpool were interested in him.

why does the value of players double when liverpool try to sign them. its not as if they are as rich as man city or chelsea.

when barcelona try to sign players, and the player wants to move, barcelona always sign the player on the cheap,

why can’t this happen with liverpool ?

Calm down guys….it`s the dude from the Daily Mail who reckons he`s worth 16 mil,not Liverpool, not Swansea, not Brendon Rodgers…if you can`t be CONSTRUCTIVE in your view points and support LFC as a true supporter would….go support someone else (ie Chunky)….what the hell are you bagging our manager for you dropkick!!!!

      July 20, 2012 at 5:37 am

Yes Ed all those who are negative before we even start are NOT Liverpool fans. Rodgers had a great season with Swansea and picked up some real bargains e.g. Vorm and he also agreed a great deal for sigurdson! It is just a price made up by the press CALM DOWN

Allo guys. It’s all a game of who will pay the most. The media and agents are the driving force shine these prices. Yes Liverpool paid 20-25 mill over what Carroll was worth at the time, it was a panic buy where we had a matter of hrs to do business once Torres made his decision to leave. It was in my opinion Liverpool dragging their feet when it comes to buying talented players.
Joe Allen on the other hand, is a good player. And to get stat’s in the region of xavi & iniesta is some credit to the 21 yr old. Swansea finished mid table in their first time in the Prem. at 21 he is such a prospect that his price is going to be high end. I’d say 10-12 million as he potentially has 12 good years ahead of him. Trust in our gaffer, he’ll get us playing good football. YNWA

I really wish we could get Johnston and Ramierez. We can all live in hope I suppose.

    July 19, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Brendan turned down Gylfi because he understood the players worth in the market. I am sure he knows where to draw the line WRT Allen’s valuation as well. Don’t panic…we have Aquaman in that position. Swansea dare not think we are Santa Claus. Those days are over! The manager is prudent with our limited resources and only wants the best player & related value. In Brendan we trust YNWA

Lfc,swansea or rodgers never said allen worths £16mil. The press are making things just 2 turn out different. May be the press don,t just like lfc or they don,t want us to sign players. Nevertheless in rodgers we trust,he will make us play like barca and things will turn out a little bit better.ynwa

It was these journalists who valued Carrol,Sturridge and co at £35m and later saying we paid over the odds, they are at it again.Leave lfc alone.

I think finally we all are seeing the BS around rodgers signing I gave him a chance but he is willing only to sell carroll and buy ex chelsea and swansea players and the yank owners want Dempsey.Come on We are all waiting for Gaston ramirez tello walcott and the diffrence in money is nothing. it was clear for the world to see we needed world class goal scorer bot we got a italian who will be good in future and we are getting Allen dempsey . And we complained that Rafa had to sell before buy

Just for the record joe allen is not English but a Welshman and for 16m is far better value than Henderson, for 1 he actually played more than 4 prem games to establish himself as a classy prem player unlike Henderson who hardly played before Liverpool bought him

BG should pls go for world class nd leave all these average players who seldomly found playin time in their respective clubs, kindly go for gaston ramires/adam johnson to take us another level.

    • Joey

      July 20, 2012 at 11:21 am

adam johnson – average player who ‘seldomly’ found playing time as you put it.

ramirez – couldn’t call him established by any stretch of the imagination, he’s young and is also a future prospect… pretty much in the same boat as allen.

every time you see someone write ‘we need world class players’ its followed by the dumbest suggestions ever.

people need to start rating the player and not which club he came from… just because you play for swansea doesn’t mean you’re automatically average. try watching a game instead of gettin all of your knowledge from stuff like football manager 🙂

We will lose either agger or skertal for 20 mill,we can spend that on Ramirez or Johnson, go for Walcott and get a centre back for 10 mil, sell Carroll as he isn’t wanted by the manager and net spending won’t be much
