With the summer transfer window in full swing, Football Talk will be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer news throughout the summer. Today, could Robin van Persie be staying at Arsenal?
Arsenal are growing ever hopeful that captain Robin van Persie will perform a dramatic u-turn and sign a new contract with the club, according to the Daily Star.
The report claims the Dutchman has been hugely impressed by Arsene Wenger’s moves in the transfer market this summer as the Frenchman re-builds his squad ahead of next season.
The Gunners have already signed German international striker Lukas Podolski and French hitman Olivier Giroud, but it’s the imminent arrival of Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla that has really got RVP excited.
Cazorla is a regular Spanish international and is on the verge of a £12.65m move to the Emirates after undergoing a medical on Thursday and being introduced to his new team mates at London Colney on Friday.
The 27-year-old is expected to travel with the Arsenal squad to a training camp in Germany next and will be joined by van Persie who is yet to secure a move away from the club, despite releasing a statement earlier in the summer declaring his intention not to sign a new contract due to concerns over Arsenal’s ambitions.
However, the Star claim the Gunners are growing increasingly confident they can persuade the Dutchman to not only stay at the club but sign a new contract after an impressive summer of transfer activity in north London.
The mood at the Colney is said to have been lifted by the arrival of several established players and RVP has also been caught up in the renewed optimism at the Emirates. The Star also claim the 28-year-old has become frustrated by the lack of action from Man City, Man Utd and Juventus and is coming round to the idea of staying as he can now see Arsenal building a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

This is an interesting report. On one hand it’s believable that Van Persie could be having second thoughts but it’s going to be difficult for the Dutchman to gain the trust of the Arsenal faithful after leaving them unimpressed with his ill-advised statement.
It’s still more than likely RVP will move on this summer but if Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez can perform dramatic u-turns….then why can’t van Perise do it?
